The Group of Experts on UN Development Programme (UNDP) today in the RA Prosecutor General’s Office held discussions with the Deputy Prosecutor General of the RA - D. Melkonyan on certain issues related to the judicial and legal reforms strategy.

Welcoming the guests, the Deputy Prosecutor General of the Republic of Armenia noted that the RA Prosecutor’s Office is always open for discussing with international partner organizations the programs and initiatives aimed at improving the efficiency of the Prosecutor’s Office and the judicial and legal system. According to David Melkonyan, the indicated ones are more relevant now, as Armenia is in process of implementing the judicial and legal strategy of reforms adopted by the RA Government, where the RA Prosecutor General’s Office plays a key role.

The members of the expert group noted that the purpose of their mission, carried out within the framework of providing methodological and expert assistance to the reforms, is to establish, in specific areas, the ideas and expectations of the beneficiary bodies in order to more effectively introduce new structures in accordance with the characteristics of the structures involved in the reforms of Armenia.

During the meeting, issues related to the development of new standards for the appointment of prosecutors, clarification of the professional, moral, psychological requirements presented to them and implementation mechanisms were discussed. The process of digitizing criminal proceedings within the framework of the introduction of an e-justice system was also touched.

In this regard, the Deputy Prosecutor General of the Republic of Armenia noted that the Prosecutor’s Office is taking effective steps to introduce an electronic system for assessing prosecutors, and the digitization of criminal proceedings is envisaged in parallel with the process of adopting the new Criminal Procedure Code of the Republic of Armenia. The latter is especially important from the point of view of increasing the efficiency.

Based on the results of the discussion, parties have come to an agreement to make the meetings more substantive.
