47 people were prosecuted for electoral offences, 40 people - for giving and receiving bribe during the early elections: summary

The RA Prosecutor General’s Office continues to represent the electoral offences during the Early Elections of the RA National Assembly held on June 20, 2021 as well as the outcomes of the activities conducted by law enforcement bodies under supervision of the Prosecutor’s Office.

 

In particular, regarding the reports sent to the investigative bodies by the working group established at the RA Prosecutor General’s Office in order to prepare materials as for 25 June 2021, 37 criminal cases were initiated, out of them:  

 

  • 23 were initiated for giving electoral bribe, receiving electoral bribe, as well as mediation to bribe, including most of them committed in aggravating circumstances,
  • 3 - forcing and hindering participation in electoral campaign,
  • 2 – violence or threat to violence in the precinct center or in the area adjacent to its entrance,
  • 1 – making false ballots and using them with prior consent with a group of people,
  • 1 – threat to damage property, hindering polling right by suggesting material assistance,
  • 1 – force to take part in elections 2 or more people, elect the party or alliance,
  • 1 - attempt to vote more than once,
  • 1 - breaching the confidentiality of ballot,
  • 4 – regarding destruction of property related to posters.

 

47 people were prosecuted on the mentioned criminal cases, 26 of them were charged and 11 people have a status of a suspect.

 

Out of the mentioned 47 people: in particular  

 

  • 22 are charged or suspected for giving bribe,
  • 18 – for taking bribe,
  • 2 – for breaching the confidentiality of ballot,
  • 1 -  forcing and hindering participation in electoral campaign,
  • 1 - destruction of property related to posters,
  • 1 - forcing to take part in elections several people, elect the party or alliance,
  • 1 - for voting more than once,
  • 1 - violence in the precinct center or in the area adjacent to its entrance.  

 

Various criminal charges have been filed for giving electoral bribe, including five people from 2 alliances and 1 party taking part in the early elections of June 20 and one of the candidates whose arrest was recognized illegal according to the decision of the court, after being released from detention, he left the territory of the Republic of Armenia and was declared wanted.

 

Detention was chosen as a preventive measure against all 6 candidates, as well as 11 people involved in criminal cases.

 

Large-scale investigative, judicial, operative and investigative measures are being undertaken on the initiated criminal cases in order to find out the full scope of people involved in criminal commitments.

 

Besides, the process of preparing materials on criminal proceedings on the ground of numerous reports and alerts on alleged electoral offences is underway. Taking into account these circumstances, the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Republic of Armenia will regularly present the results of the work of law enforcement bodies within the framework of criminal proceedings.
